1. What is your current role, and what makes it exciting?
Logistics may appear to be a straightforward job - moving things from point A to point B. However, when we're dealing with hundreds of loading and delivery points, things start to get interesting. In Promidea, we're not just limited to one mode of transport but we combine all of them: vessel shipments, air shipments, trains, and road shipments. Additionally, we navigate the complex customs requirements and procedures of different countries worldwide.
Even when you think you've got the plan ready with all its details, unexpected challenges can arise, such as weather-related delays and traffic congestion, which require quick problem-solving skills. In my role as the team leader, I oversee the entirety of our shipments, and I also delve into the finer details of some, as I'm always eager to ensure smooth operations.
2. How has your career developed at PROMIDEA?
I started my career at Promidea in the entry-level position of a Junior Logistics professional within the department. Over the years, I've worked my way up, and some years ago, I assumed a leadership role within the team.
Throughout my career, I've played a pivotal role in building various teams, either by assembling groups of experienced professionals or by recruiting junior talent and helping them evolve into skilled professionals.
3. What is unique about working in your domain at Promidea?
Well, mostly everything, as each project may have unique requirements, whether it's related to product specifications, shipping methods, or destination countries. This level of customization requires a deep understanding of the client’s needs and adaptability in finding tailored solutions. We collaborate with logistics partners in numerous logistics hubs, ports, and airports around the world. While the core aspects of the job remain consistent, each location, from Shanghai to Koper or Durban, has its distinct way of operating.
4. What does it take to be successful as a logistics manager in the industry?
Certainly, a robust understanding of the entire supply chain, from sourcing and procurement to distribution and delivery, is fundamental. However, success in this field hinges on several other crucial aspects.
First, a commitment to continuous learning and staying updated on industry trends, as well as the ability to adapt and respond to unexpected disruptions, is vital. In a highly competitive industry, the ability to find cost-effective solutions while maintaining service quality is a must.
Last, but not least, the strength of the team plays a pivotal role. A cohesive department where members support and complement each other is the key to smooth operations.
